Abbiamo avuto il piacere di incontrare i Cosmic Gate, è nata una interessantissima intervista da leggere con la massima attenzione.

Con il vostro “Start To Feel US Bus Tour 2014” avete portato il vostro sound in giro per gli Stati Uniti, quali sono le differenze che avete notato tra il pubblico Statunitense e quello Europeo?
Questo è difficile da dire, come in Europa dove il pubblico cambia da paese a paese e addirittura da una città all’altra, non si può paragonare il pubblico dei club di Miami con la folla che partecipa all’EDC a Las Vegas. In generale il pubblico di tutto il Mondo ascolta gli stessi programmi radio dei dj, le stesse trasmissioni in diretta, ecc. la maggior parte di essi conosce le nostre produzioni più recenti, vengono ai nostri spettacoli e vogliono che noi le suoniamo, insieme ad alcuni dei nostri classici. Così i nostri spettacoli variano in base alla situazione che si costruisce intorno, c’è del pubblico che preferisce un sound più aggressivo altri che preferiscono un sound un po’ più trance, e questo è davvero molto buono, perché fa si che gli spettacoli siano differenti l’uno dall’altro.
Come è nato il vostro album “Start To Feel”? Qual era il concetto originale e le speranze legate a questo progetto?
A dire il vero quando abbiamo iniziato a realizzare i nostri nuovi pezzi, fondamentalmente sapevamo già cosa non volevamo realizzare, in pratica non seguire il percorso che porta al tipico suono EDM. Quando abbiamo finito i primi demo ci siamo resi conto abbastanza rapidamente che il nuovo album sarebbe stato melodico, toccante e emozionale mantenendo la struttura delle canzoni reali, senza concentrarsi sul Drop come fanno tante tracce in questo periodo. In seguito quando il nostro amico Cary Brothers venne con i testi per Start To Feel, tutti noi abbiamo esclamato wow. Questo praticamente riassume l’idea e le sensazioni dell’intero album e porta tutto a tre brevi parole, così l’idea di Start To Feel è nata. Abbiamo così pensato che fosse un bel titolo per poter risvegliare la vostra mente.
Come avete scelto i brani che compongono la tracking list?
Fare la track list di Start to Feel, che ci crediate o no, è stato abbastanza facile per noi.Tutte le canzoni che abbiamo finito ci soddisfacevano e ci piacevano molto, così abbiamo deciso di inserirle nell’album. Le tracce che non ci convincevano, abbiamo semplicemente deciso di non terminarle e lasciarle li per poi forse riprenderle in un secondo momento. Questo è il motivo per cui ci sono così tante tracce nell’album, 17 sono sicuramente molte per un album dance e per un album in generale, ma non volevamo lasciare nessuna traccia inedita, e così abbiamo voluto presentare tutto il lavoro in un unico album.
Nell’album ci sono moltissime collaborazioni, come scegliete gli artisti con cui collaborare?
Naturalmente abbiamo lavorato con talenti come Emma Hewitt o Jonathan Mendelson con i quali abbiamo già lavorato in precedenza, ma siamo sempre alla ricerca di nuovi talenti, come Kristina Antuna per cintarne solo uno.
Deve esserci una chimica, dobbiamo sentire quello che il dj oppure il cantante sta facendo, non avremmo mai lavorato con qualcuno solo per il suo nome, tutto deve nascere da un lato artistico e personale, niente di meglio come essere in tour con il nostro amico Orjan Nilsen e combattere in modo simpatico su chi sta realizzando la traccia di collaborazione, lui o noi lol 🙂
Il vostro ultimo singolo è “Alone”, potete parlarci di questa canzone, dove avete preso l’ispirazione per realizzarla e come avete incontrato la cantante Kristina Antuna?
Quando si lavora su un nuovo album e si ricercano nuovi talenti c’è molto lavoro da effettuare, ma molte volte bisogna avere fortuna. Kristina aveva firmato con un management con il quale avevamo già lavorato, abbiamo ascoltato molte demo e ci siamo entrambi fermati su Kristina, la sua voce è semplicemente sul pezzo, moderna e lineare ma nello stesso tempo piena di sentimento e ci ha colpito subito. Abbiamo cambiato un paio di cose per mettere la nostra musica sotto i suoi testi fino ad arrivare al lavoro finale che è quello che tutti voi potete ascoltare ora. Stiamo già lavorando su della nuova musica con lei, Kristina è semplicemente un grande talento, una persona genuina e divertente.
Anche se ampiamente trance, il vostro suono è ricco di riferimenti ed influenze a differenti stili di musica elettronica. Quale ispirazione avete sentito in Start To Feel?
Le nostre influenze sono veramente ampie, a partire dai primi anni 80, passando dalla musica classica alla più profonda underground elettronica / techno e forse tutta questa varietà di gusti e generi che ascoltiamo si riflette nella nostra musica.
Siamo sicuri di non avere il tipico suono trance, ma la maggior parte delle nostre canzoni in qualche modo hanno un tocco trance, indubbiamente, ma ciò che è importante per noi è non essere limitati a un solo genere musicale, ma produrre musica aggiungendo tutto ciò che ci influenza di buono, semplicemente non ci sono limitazione davanti ai nostri occhi. È questo il modo in cui gestiremo le cose anche in futuro, cercando di dare un suono fresco e moderno. Questa è la firma che i Cosmic Gate mostreranno sempre.

With your “Start To Feel US Bus Tour 2014” you brought your sound around the United States… What are the differences you noticed between the US audience and the European audience?
This is hard to say, as audiences in Europe from country to country, or even in the same country from city to city can be total different to each other, as much as you can not compare the say Miami Club audience to the crowd that goes to EDC in Vegas. In general tho with audiences worldwide listening to the same dj radio shows, live broadcast etc., most crowds know the newest releases we have, come and want us to play these, plus some of our classics for sure, so our shows do more vary from what we build around, some crowds like it tougher some maybe a bit more trance, and this is good, shows are different to each other and things keep fresh for us like this, and for the audience most important as well.
How was your album “Start To Feel” born? What was your original concept and hopes for it?
To be honest, when we started to work on new music, we basically more knew how we did not want to sound, and this was to follow the path down to the typical edm sound. when we finished the first demos we realized pretty quick that the new album would be kind of melodic, pretty touching and emotional, holding real song structures, not just focus on the drop as so many tracks these days do…later then when our friend Cary Brothers came up with the lyrics for start to feel, we though like, wow, this pretty much sums up the whole idea and the feel of the album for us, brings everything together in three short words, and so the idea of start to feel was born, which we thought after wake your mind is a nice installment title wise on top.
How did you choose the songs that make up the track list?
The track listing on start to feel was pretty easy for us, believe it or not. every song we finish, in the end this means that we are happy with, really like it, and we decided it makes it to the album then. tracks that we do not get to the point we simply do not finish them, they be left behind somewhere on the road, maybe we work on them another time… Thats also the reason for the big amount of tracks, 17 is definitely much for a dance album or album in general, but we did not want to leave any of the music unreleased, we liked them all, and wanted to present it to the public all in one.
In the album there are a lot of collaborations, how do you choose the artists to work with?
Of course we worked with talents like Emma Hewitt or Jonathan Mendelson that we had the pleasure of working before already, but on top we always search for new talent, Kristina Antuna to just mention one.
The Chemistry just has to be right, we have to feel what a dj or singer is doing, we would not work with someone just to do name dropping, it just has to fit from the artistic and personal side too, nothing better
than to be touring like with our friend Orjan Nilsen and to fight in a fun way over who is playing the collaboration track fair game, him or us, lol 🙂
Your latest single is “Alone”, can you tell us about this song, where did you get the inspiration to make it happen and how did you come across the singer Kristina Antuna?
Working on a new album and finding new talent is a lot of homework to do, but sometimes you just need luck. Kristina was signed to a management that we have worked with already, and when we listened to a lot of demos
that they had, we both right away stopped on Kristina, as her voice is simply so on point, modern and straight, but soulful in the same moment, and on top alone hit us right away. We changed a few things and put our music under her lyrics until they were how you guys know alone now. we are already working on more music with her, Kristina is simply a great talent and a fun genuine person on top, as said, more to come soon!
While broadly trance, your sound is full of references and influences to many different styles of electronic music. What kind of inspirations do you hear in Start To Feel?
Our influences are really wide, starting in the early 80’s, going from classical music to deepest electronic/techno underground, and maybe this super wide range of taste and genres we listen to shows and reflects in our music. We are sure no typical trance act, but most of our songs at least have a trance touch to it somehow, undoubtably, but what is important to us, we would not let a genre limit us, we simply produce music and add what ever influence we think is good, and limitations in our eyes simply are not, and this is how we will handle things in the future too, trying to always sound fresh and modern, but our cosmic gate handwriting, our signature feel will always show.
