Abbiamo avuto l’occasione di intervistare Roger Shah, ci ha parlato dei suoi inizi, della nascita della mix compilation “Music For Balearic People” e della sua visione musicale. Per saperne di più non vi resta che leggere questa intervista esclusiva:

Parlaci dei tuoi inizi, quando ti sei avvicinato al mondo della musica?
Sono nella musica da quando ne ho memoria, ho iniziato a suonare la tastiera da quando ero giovane, andavo alla scuola di musica e a un certo punto iniziai a fare il DJ.
Ho iniziato in piccoli club del posto fino ad arrivare al migliore della mia città natale Stoccarda, proprio qui fui scoperto da una casa discografica locale e con loro ho firmato i primi contratti discografici risalenti al 1995, da qui ho iniziato a costruire ogni cosa in tutti questi anni.
Come e quando è nata l’idea di realizzare “Music For Balearic People”?
Dopo il collasso dell’intera industria musicale e dopo aver perso il mio più grande contratto discografico nel 2001, ho deciso di fare un passo indietro per un po’ e ho provato a sviluppare una tipologia di suono unico, sono anche andato molte volte a Ibiza e proprio qui ho sentito un legame particolare con l’isola ottenendo molta ispirazione.
Dal momento che Ibiza è un’isola delle baleari il nome di Music for Balearic People ha preso sempre più spazio nella mia mente.
Quali sono i criteri che hai usato per scegliere i brani di questo sesto episodio?
Dovevano adattarsi allo stato d’animo e al viaggio musicale che avevo in mente per il volume 6. I miei mix album sono sempre una grande opportunità per mostrare il mondo dove sono e rappresento come DJ e anche quello che suono nel mio radio show settimanale.
Il tuo stile musicale è molto particolare, come nascono le tue produzioni?
Nascono nella mia mente, quando compongo non seguo le mode, seguo solo i miei sentimenti e le mie ispirazioni per creare qualcosa che voglio suonare e condividere con il mondo.
C’è un artista che ha maggiormente influenzato il tuo percorso artistico?
Ci sono tanti artisti che mi piacciono e che hanno influenzato la mia carriera, mi piace ascoltare una vasta gamma di suoni e fare lo stesso con le mie produzioni, penso che gli artisti che m’hanno influenzato di più sono stati Tiesto, Hans Zimmer, Moya Brennan ma anche gruppi come gli U2.
Come vedi l’attuale scena musicale?
È davvero molto interessante, dopo tutta questa EDM rumorosa vedo che sta tornando a diventare molto più musicale, cantanti/compositori che sono in continuo sviluppo, mi piace anche questo tipo di deep house influenzata dal pop che è molto vicina al suono del mio Balearic con tutte le chitarre e le canzoni orecchiabili, questo è quello che sto facendo da anni. Penso che la Trance è sulla via del ritorno, quindi penso che tutto vada bene.

Tell us about your beginnings, when did you approach the world of music?
I’m into music since I can remember, started to learn playing keyboard when I was young, went into music schools and at some point started to DJ.
Started in small local club and ended up in the best one in hometown in Stuttgart, there I got discovered by a local record company and signed my first record deals way back in 1995 and build everything during all those years from there.
How and when is born the idea to realize “Music For Balearic People”?
After the whole music industry collabsed and I lost my major record deal in 2001 I took a backseat for a while and tried to develop a kind of unique sound, I also went a lot of times to Ibiza and felt a special connection with the island and got a lot of inspiration from there. SInce Ibiza is a balearic island the name for music for balearic people has been grown in my mind.
What are the criteria you used to select the songs of this sixth episode?
They had to fit into the mood and musical journey which I had in mind for volume 6. My mix album is always a great chance to show the world where I am and stand for as a DJ and also what I play in my weekly radio show. So it is like doing a puzzle just with music pieces.
Your musical style is very unique, how are born your productions?
They are born in my mind, when I compose I don’t follow any hype and just follow my feelings and inspirations to create something I like to play and share with the world.
There is an artist who has most influenced your artistic career?
There are so many artists I like and have influenced my career, I like to listen to a wide range of sound and also do the same with my own productions, I think most influential artists have been Tiesto, Hans Zimmer, Moya Brennan but also Bands like U2
How do you see the current music scene?
It’s very interesting, after all that EDM big room noise it is going back to being more musical, singer/songwriting which is a great development, I also like that kind of pop influenced deep house which is very close to my Balearic sound with all the guitars and catchy songs, this is what I’m doing since years. I also feel that trance is on the way to come back as well, so I think all is good.
